Smallholder food producers in Kenya are expected to start reaping positive returns as the Warehouse Receipt System (WRS) expands in the country.
Kenya is fast-tracking adoption of WRS which was unveiled in July 2020. Warehouse Receipt Systems is expected to streamline trading in farm commodities as farmers would store their produce in a registered and certified store. The system offers a wide range of benefits to rural farmers: market assurance, best prices and reduction in post-harvest losses.
WRS is being currently functional in Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin, Gishu, Meru, Embu, Nyeri, Makueni and Machakos counties.
About Warehouse Receipt System (WRS)
Under the Warehouse Receipt System, owners of commodes, who may be farmers or dealers. deposit produce in certified/approved warehouses. They are issued a title document called a Warehouse Receipt as proof of ownership. In a WRS, the produce is cleaned and fumigated to remove impurities and pests, alongside commodity grading.
